A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols began at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, England in 1918. It was an adaptation by the dean of King’s College from a service first arranged in 1880 by the bishop of Truro. Since 1919, the service at King’s has opened with the hymn “Once in royal David’s city”. Other churches began using the service soon after it appeared in Cambridge, and its use has spread around the world.

A live broadcast of the 2016 Cambridge service is scheduled for Christmas Eve at 10 a.m. (Eastern), with a repeat at 9:32 p.m. on the BBC World Service. Some public radio stations in the United States carry the live broadcast with a repeat on Christmas Day, and listings for online streaming are below.

Live streaming is also available on the TuneIn smart phone app at 10 a.m. on December 24.
